The Role

President & General Manager
executive search

The President seat is doing succession work now. Boards hire a President or GM to prove CEO readiness on a live P&L 18 to 24 months before a handover, which makes this search a governance decision as much as an operating one. The pool is tight: leaders who have carried a full P&L across business units are scarcer than functional executives, and extended hold periods keep the proven ones in seat. We name which of the three President jobs the business is hiring before the spec exists.  We have run hundreds of these searches.

The Roles We Place

Three flavors of President. Each one is a different search.

The title sounds the same. The job is not. We name which one the business is hiring before the search opens.

The operational #2 in a founder-led company. Runs the business so the CEO can run the strategy. Often grooming for the CEO seat, often signaling the founder is ready to step back.

  • Direct report to a founder or owner-CEO

  • Carries operational P&L, the CEO holds strategic P&L

  • Comfortable being second on the org chart, first inside the operating cadence

  • Often can become CEO within 24 months of placement

Runs a P&L inside a larger company. Carries full operational accountability for a business unit, geography, or product line. Usually reports to a Group CEO or holding-company CEO.

  • Owns top-line and bottom-line for a specific BU or geography

  • Has built or scaled a P&L from $50M to $500M+ in revenue

  • Comfortable matrix-managed inside a multi-BU structure

  • Often the talent pipeline for Group CEO or holdco CEO succession

The operational anchor in a PE-backed portco. Carries the value-creation plan day to day. Usually placed when the founder-CEO is being repositioned, or when the company needs operating discipline the founding team can't supply.

  • Direct accountability to the operating partner and the board

  • Inherits a 100-day plan and a value-creation thesis

  • Most placements convert to CEO at exit or before

  • Comfortable with the founder dynamic, fluent in EBITDA architecture

Common Questions

What leaders may ask before a search

A COO usually carries operational scope without full P&L ownership; a President usually carries the P&L. The titles get used interchangeably, and calibrating the right scope is the first work of the search.

Often, and that is frequently the point. Boards use the seat to validate CEO readiness on a live P&L 18 to 24 months ahead of a transition. We manage the messaging and confidentiality so the signal lands when you want it to.

Our President and GM searches close in a median of about 118 days. Searches tied to an unannounced succession can run longer by design, and we plan that timeline with the board up front.
