The Industry

Build for where your business
is going, not where it has been.

The physical economy is being rebuilt sub-sector by sub-sector. Reindustrialization is pulling capital into US manufacturing, and agentic AI is moving from pilot to the operating model, reshaping the warehouse floor, the supply chain, and the C-suite above them. The skill that now defines these leaders is one their predecessors never needed: in our 2026 research, nearly half of executives said AI fluency will be the most important capability their successor requires, and one they were never asked for themselves. We find the leaders built for where the business is going, not where it has been.

Transportation & Logistics

Logistics leadership for the autonomous era.

3PLs are rapidly evolving into agentic operations where AI agents now execute millions of freight tasks and handle complex scheduling. In this landscape, your margin hinges on a leader who can pair deep operating discipline with the technical fluency to manage automated orchestration. Most of these high-impact executives are currently running active books, but we've built these relationships.

Supply Chain & Distribution Services

Turning supply chain into your growth engine

Supply chain has moved from a back-office cost center to a primary competitive advantage. We find the leaders who transform distribution platforms and B2B marketplaces into high-visibility, resilient operations. Success today requires a rare mix of operational grit, AI-driven decision speed, and a PE-sponsor communication rhythm. These executives don't just manage overhead—they build the infrastructure that allows a business to scale.

Building Materials & Chemicals

Leading the onshoring transformation

US manufacturing construction continues to absorb tariff-driven onshoring, data center build, and the OBBBA infrastructure cycle. Building products and specialty chemicals businesses sell into a different customer mix than they did three years ago. Leaders here pair commercial execution with manufacturing operations discipline and the regulatory fluency that comes with running a chemicals or industrial materials business. The candidate pool rewards relationships that already exist. We have them.

Packaging, Paper & Plastics

Leading the packaging pivot

Packaging is caught between sustainability mandates and the reality of rising input costs. We find executives who can lead through both. Pairing deep manufacturing expertise with the commercial fluency to manage high-stakes relationships in CPG, beauty, and pharma. Our experience spans public companies and PE-backed platforms, giving us access to a narrow pool of leaders who know how to protect margins while navigating a consolidated market.

Discrete & Process Manufacturing

Leadership for the modern production floor

This is the engine of the industrial economy, where the lines between discrete and process manufacturing are increasingly blurred by smart factory transformation. Today’s operating leaders must navigate onshored capacity builds and energy transition demands while protecting the bottom line. We find executives who have led plant operations through large-scale shifts and managed complex P&Ls through entire market cycles. Our reputation is built on identifying the rare executives who can bridge the gap between legacy manufacturing and next-gen industrial tech.

The Leadership Landscape

What your peers are dealing with in
industrial, manufacturing & distribution

The executive leadership challenges in this industry are moving faster than most anticipated. Here's what's actually driving search activity right now and what it means for the leaders companies need.

The Challenges

Talent scarcity is the new supply chain bottleneck.

  • The most capable operators are currently scaling mission-critical segments of the domestic onshoring cycle; they aren’t looking for roles. They have to be identified and engaged with partner-level credibility.
  • In high-value sectors like specialty chemicals and autonomous logistics, the proven candidate pool is tightly held. We operate at the level to access this community before a search even begins.
  • Off-limits conflicts at large, "volume-based" firms shrink your candidate pool exactly when you need the most specialized talent.
  • 99% of industrial executives say AI is impacting the executive role. Versus 94% across all industries. AI is universal in the industrial C-suite. The question is no longer whether to hire for it, but how to define the role around it.
The Opportunities

Strategic hiring as an infrastructure accelerant.

  • AI fluency is the top skill needed over the next 3-5 years, according to the Widening Gap report from ON Partners - the largest sector delta in the study. The industrial executive's role is being rewritten in real time.
  • With record infrastructure spending and domestic capacity builds, there is a prime window to install leadership that brings "tech-firm urgency" to traditional manufacturing environments.
  • In an era of smart factories, the highest ROI comes from leaders who can bridge the gap between traditional P&L management and digital orchestration. These firms are securing the few executives capable of turning capital investment into immediate margin expansion.
What's Changing

The landscape and roles being rewritten.

  • 31% of your peers already updating executive roles to reflect new market priorities, the approach to hiring has changed. Leadership transitions are no longer about "filling a seat"; they are being used as a catalyst to redesign the C-suite for an era of autonomous execution and domestic capacity builds.
  • Onshoring and domestic infrastructure cycles have created a demand for a new breed of executive. This "Agile Industrial" leader pairs traditional manufacturing grit and capex discipline with the high-velocity execution and technology fluency typically seen in hyperscale tech environments.
  • Today’s industrial leaders are expected to move past 'reactive' logistics and drive the bottom line. We find the executives who can turn a supply chain into a growth engine—accelerating decision speed and scaling as the business evolves.
Common Questions

What leaders may ask before a search

This vertical is five adjacent sub-sectors moving at once: discrete and process manufacturing, supply chain and distribution, transportation and logistics, packaging, and building materials and chemicals.

Each has its own operational depth, customer set, regulatory environment, and capital structure. The leaders who run these businesses well are rarely available, usually because they are inside an active operational transformation or a sponsor value creation plan.

Finding them takes direct relationships in the specific sub-sector and the ability to recognize operating depth that actually transfers between sub-sectors.

US manufacturing PMI hit a four-year high of 52.7 in March 2026, and Morgan Stanley is forecasting decade-high US industrial growth in the second half of 2026 into 2027. Capital is flowing into onshored capacity, domestic distribution build, and supply chain resilience. The leadership demand follows the capital.

Companies opening new US plants, expanding distribution into new geographies, or building first-time-onshore operations need executives who have actually done it before. The pool is narrow, and most candidates are running active builds.  ON Partners has spent years building relationships across primes, suppliers, and PE-backed platforms.

Confidentiality is operationalized at every step: anonymized position specs for early-stage candidate conversations, sequenced disclosure of company identity, NDAs before any sponsor introduction, and a single partner who controls who knows what. We have closed thousands of confidential searches without leaks.
